Obituary of Alice G. McNutt

Alice G McNutt, of Moncton, passed away at the Kenneth E. Spencer Memorial Home on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at the age of 94 years. Our Mom was born on the family farm Nov. 4,1914, on the Tobique River near Plaster Rock. She was the first daughter, after four sons, in a family of ten children of Duncan and Alma Reed. Her early years were spent on the farm and attending school in the one room schoolhouse nearby (her son Doug would be the last 6 year- old to attend the school before it closed forever in 1961). At age 14, she had top marks in her class and could have gone on to high school but chose to stay home and help raise her younger brothers and sisters. During the 1930's, the great Depression was ravaging the country but Mom and the family were comfortable and self-sufficient on the farm. In 1944, she moved to Moncton to work in an aircraft factory, to help in the war effort. There, she met and married our Dad, Clarence C. McNutt. They soon moved back to the Tobique, where her four children were born. The next 20 years were not easy years- our Dad worked in the woods for months at a time so Mom had to manage to raise the family mostly by herself - living in a rural area with no car, phone or radio added to the hardship, although two wonderful grand parents and several relatives helped a great deal. We managed to survive, and after our father died in 1964, Mom moved the family to Moncton, a place she often talked and dreamed about during our youth. She spent over 40 years, the happiest of her life, in her adopted town, in her own home and among family and friends. She was a strong person, independent, proud and with strong faith and beliefs. She was a member of Highfield Baptist Church for over 35 years. She was a great Mom and a wonderful role model who instilled in us character, high moral values and a strong work ethic that has served us well all our lives - we loved her deeply and will never forget the help she gave us in life. She is survived by her children, Reed (Loella) Saint John, Doug (Janet) Moncton, Katherine (Dallas) Deleavey, Prince George, BC, and Cheryl, Toronto, Ontario, step daughters, Hilda (Arden) Fletcher, Advocate Harbour, NS, Carol, Amherst, NS, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Ben Reed, a sister Bertha Phillips, and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by brothers, Burt, John, Delbert, Kenneth, and Kitchener and sisters, Ethel and Addie. There is no visitation at the request of the family. Interment will be held in Linton Corner Cemetery, Plaster Rock, NB, at a later date.
