Obituary of Ernest Alfred Jonah
Ernest Alfred Jonah, in his 97th year, passed away peacefully at the Veteran's Health Centre, Moncton, on Saturday, October 19, 2013. Born December 7, 1916, in Portage Vale, NB, he was the son of the late Arthur and Edith (Marks) Jonah.
Ernest was a veteran of WWII, serving with the 8th Princess Louise Hussars, in North Africa and Europe. Upon returning from the war, he worked as a carman with the CNR until his retirement. Ernest was a member of the National Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, Keith Lodge #23 F & AM, Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 6 Moncton and a former member of the NB Wildlife Federation.
He loved spending time with his family and friends at the cottage in Portage Vale. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and riding his ATV and in his later years enjoyed going for drives on the back country roads. He also loved listening to old time fiddle music, tapping his toes and playing his "air fiddle"
Fondly remembered by his children Connie Pangburn (Richard), Bob Jonah (Cathy), Shirley Phillips (Stu) all of Moncton; grandchildren Julie Pangburn (Nick Dimetriou), Ben Phillips (Jacynte Leger), Dan Phillips (Melanie), Greg Jonah, Chris Phillips (Courtney Berry), Jen Dallaire (Jason), Erin MacPhee (Mike); great grandchildren Anthony Bacho, Ella MacPhee, Cameron Dallaire and Sam Phillips, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by sister Verna Dogget of Hamilton, ON; foster sister Bertha Smith of Plaster Rock, NB and sister-in-law Jessie Jonah of Sussex, NB.
Besides his parents, Ernest is predeceased by his wife Ruth (Kirk) in April in 1996; brothers Eddie, Ronald, Harold and grandson Jasen Pangburn.
The funeral service will be held at Riverview Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 214 Pine Glen Rd. Riverview on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 1:30 pm with Barry Hubley officiating.
The family will be receiving relatives and friends in the reception room of the funeral home immediately following the service.
Interment will be in Fairhaven Memorial Gardens
