Obituary of Gustave "Gus" A. Pettipas, Sr.

It is with great sadness that the family would like to announce the passing of Gustave "Gus" A. Pettipas, Sr. at the Moncton Hospital on April 26, 2014. Born in Cape Breton, N.S. on October 5th, 1925, Gus was the son of the late Oscar Pettipas and Bertha (LeCointe) Pettipas. He was predeceased by his beloved first wife, Malvina, in 1994. Gus and Malvina moved to Moncton from Cape Breton to operate what became the family business, Moncton Transit Ltd., in 1962, which provided city transit bus service to the City of Moncton until Gus sold out to the City in 1979. In 1964 Gus started Metro School Bus Services to provide school bus service to what was then School District #1. The companies also operated highway coaches out of the bus garage Gus built on Pacific Avenue (as it was then) until and after his retirement. Gus served on the Transportation Committee of the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce. He was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Moncton Rotary Club, was for many years a director of the Canadian Transit Association, and was a member of the Odd Fellowes and the Probus club. For many years Gus enjoyed his cottage at Cocagne and he and Malvina, and later Rhealdine spent many happy winters at his house in Florida. Gus loved four-wheeling on Caledonia Mountain with his dog, Randy, and was an avid hunter with his brother, Alfred, and brother-in-law, Arnold. They hunted together in NFLD., N.B. and N.S. Gus is survived by his second wife, Rhealdine; four children, Gus Pettipas, Jr. (Linda) of Weldon, Brian Pettipas (Charlotte "Nan") of Moncton, Brent Pettipas (Ginette) of Moncton and Brenda Robinson (Kent) of Moncton; five grandchildren, Dale, Craig, Paul (Karen), Shawn (Marie-Eve) and Krista, five great-grandchildren, Amber, Ericka, Megan, Wyatt and Lia, one brother, Alfred, of Pictou, N.S., and several nieces and nephews. Following the family’s wishes, there will be no visitation at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at the Riverview Funeral Home Chapel, 214 Pine Glen Road, on Thursday, May 1st, 2014 at 2:00pm with Reverend Jim MacDonald Officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Moncton Food Depot Alimentaire, to the Moncton SPCA, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Riverview Funeral Home 214 Pine Glen Rd, Riverview, NB (506) 857-9544.
