Obituary of Pauline Ann Wood

WOOD, Pauline Ann – 1919-2012 – It is with great sadness that the family of Pauline Ann (Gould) Wood, 93, of Moncton, announces her passing at the Veterans’ Health Centre on Wednesday, September 12th, 2012 following a brief illness. Daughter of the late Norman and Mary (Burke) Gould, she was born in Amherst, N.S. in 1919. Growing up in Moncton, she attended Aberdeen & Notre Dame schools before moving to Saint John. She served with the Canadian Army in World War II as a first class driver, and after discharge went on to become the first female certified jeweler/engraver in New Brunswick. She was married to the late George E. Wood, and lived in Saint John, Charlottetown & then Sydney, where she was an active member of St. George’s Anglican Church, serving on various committees and the ladies auxiliary. She enjoyed camping with her family throughout Cape Breton, the Maritimes, and New England. After a 1967 boating accident claimed her husband & son Robert in Arichat, N.S., she returned to Moncton. Pauline then became a child guidance counselor for the CNIB of New Brunswick, educating preschoolers and parents, and was instrumental in placing blind children at the CNIB School in Halifax. In retirement, she was an avid gardener, and enjoyed swimming, knitting, cooking, carpentry, and caning chairs. She was always willing to turn her hand to any challenge and was a very caring wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend. As well, her pet poodles always meant a great deal to her. Pauline is survived by her son, Richard E. (Debbie) of Moncton, sister-in-law, Jean Gould (Ed) of Calgary, and several nieces and nephews. As the last surviving member of her immediate family, she was predeceased by her husband George, son Robert, sisters, Mabel LeBlanc, Edith Gould, Leona Pierce, and brothers, Father Alderic, Rudy, Eric, and Edward Gould. In accordance with her personal request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private graveside service will be held at Fernhill Cemetery in Saint John, N.B. In Pauline’s memory, donations may be made to the CNIB, or the Veterans’ Health Centre. The family wishes to thank all the staff of the Veterans’ Health Centre; Dr. J.M. Auffrey, Dr. C. Telfer, and Dr. Alkeran for the wonderful compassionate care she received throughout the last several months. Also thank you to the staff of Manor Notre Dame for the care she received while she was a resident, as well as to her special friends Monique, her VON nurse, Darry, her pets’ veterinarian, and her many friends and family for all their understanding and support throughout this difficult time.
