Obituary of Harriet E. McCulloch

It is with fond memories and deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harriet E. McCulloch (Hughes), 87 years, of Riverview, NB. Harriet passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Saturday, April 24, 2021 after a brief illness. Born and raised in Barkers Point, NB, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Rickard) Hughes. She loved Barkers Point, only leaving when she moved to Ontario to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. It was during her service that she married William "Bill" McCulloch, bringing him back to New Brunswick where they had a family and built a life together. A recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, she was a well-known community and political volunteer. As a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6 and as Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary, she gave countless hours of her time organizing events and sharing her wonderful home cooking. Harriet was awarded a Royal Canadian Legion Certificate of Merit in honour of her hard work. A proud Progressive Conservative, she was honoured with a life-time Membership in recognition of her many years volunteering at fundraisers and on campaigns for the party. She loved the rush and excitement of an election campaign. Harriet had a very active social life, where a night spent at home alone was simply a night wasted. Harriet and Bill had many great friends and loved hosting them for dart and card nights. She also enjoyed playing bingo, especially at the Riverview Lions Club. When Bill’s health failed, she dutifully cared for him at home. Once he entered long-term care, she visited him daily—they were very important to each other. As a proud Monarchist, one of the highlights of her life was having tea with Queen Elizabeth II. Harriet leaves a legacy through her children and grandchildren. Their fond memories of her baking and cooking, her love of politics, and especially her support and love for them will always live on. Harriet is survived by her daughter Beverly (Robert) Blumenthal, Dartmouth, NS, son Michael (Karen), Riverview, NB; grandchildren, Jason (Ashley), Nevada, Melissa (Travis Rayworth), Riverview, NB, Megan (Grant Lamontagne) Blumenthal, Halifax, NS, Philip (Maureen Welsman) Blumenthal, Lwr. Sackville, NS; great-grandchildren Courtney and Caden, Riverview, NB; brother Gary Hughes of Quispamsis, NB; nieces Natasha (Franck) Lestringant, New York, Elizabeth (Cody Fullerton) Hughes, Rothesay, NB. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband William "Bill" McCulloch, and her sons William "Billy" and Joseph "Joey" McCulloch. To ensure the safety of her friends and loved ones, a small private service was held, with internment taking place in Alderwood Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place when we can travel and gather safely. If you are able, we encourage you to make a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #6 in Harriet’s memory.
