Obituary of Anthony Leonard "Len" Flynn

Leonard Flynn of Moncton, NB passed away at the Moncton Hospital on Wednesday, February 15th 2023 at the age of 91. Born in Dublin, Ireland he was the son of the late James and Catherine (Sally) Flynn. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his wife Eileen Flynn (MacLeod) in 2013, baby Daughter Andrea Claire, sisters Frances Sweeney, Anne Doyle, and brother Peter Flynn. Survived by daughters Carol Stokes (Shawn) of Riverview, Norah Keohan of Moncton, Una Flynn of Moncton, sister Claire Kelly of Dublin, Ireland, and brother Paul Flynn of Toronto. His eight grandchildren, Kendra, Tyler, Andrea, Tara, Ryleigh, Jared, Amber, Lyndsey and his eleven great-grandchildren. Our father emigrated from Ireland to Canada in 1954 arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax. He boarded a train to Toronto, Ontario, met our mother in 1955 and was married in 1956. Our Dad always worked with vehicles; driving everything from streetcars to oil tankers and later returned to school at NBCC to become an auto mechanic at the ripe age of 45. He was hired at Canadian Tire in Dieppe and was known as the best front-end alignment man in Moncton. Len truly enjoyed his career at Canadian Tire, retiring at the age of 64 after single handedly ensuring the auto-mechanics were receiving the same shares bestowed to store employees. After retiring Leonard worked on his 12-acre blueberry farm in Scoudouc. Our parents always enjoyed traveling. As young kids in Ontario we were loaded into the family car along with the dog to go on week-long camping trips with a tent trailer and small boat. We often made the long drive to Cape Breton to visit our Mother's family and tour the Cabot Trail. In the late 60s our Dad began building a 26 foot-long Mahogany cabin-cruiser boat. Leonard was given the opportunity to transfer his work to Moncton and jumped at the chance to be closer to Eileen's relatives. After packing up the family home and us kids, he moved his prized boat by a trailer he built himself and hauled it all the way to Moncton. With the help of his daughters and a neighborhood boy Len finished the boat and launched it in Pointe-du-Chene the summer of 1972. To everyone's amazement, it floated and never took on water! We spent summers sailing on Shediac Bay and making trips to Summerside, PEI. As kids, we always wanted a cottage but our Dad used to say "We have the best cottage because it floats!" Years later, our parents sold the boat, bought a motor-home and continued to travel, taking many trips to Western Canada, and the United States. Our Dad had strong roots to his homeland of Ireland which he passed down to his family. He was a talented musician and could be found singing old Irish ballads and playing his harmonica while enjoying a glass of his homemade wine. He afforded his family many opportunities to accompany him on trips to Ireland and England. He and Eileen were founding members of the Irish and Newfoundland Club and continued to support the Irish Association, Westmorland Chapter in later years. Per Leonard's request there will be no funeral. Interment will be in Alderwood Cemetery at a later date.
